Adventures in bra dyeing

Turquoise bra

I think I’ve had turquoise on the brain for months now because of Elsa. One result of this is that I bought a lovely white bra kit from Grey’s with the intention of dyeing it and then decided on turquoise. Shocker.

It was a really interesting experiment though and I’m pretty excited about repeating it! I knew going into it that the different fiber contents of the different materials meant that they would each take up different amounts of dye but I hadn’t realized they would turn out to be completely different shades. This one reminds me of Giselle from Enchanted for some reason. I want to try doing one with a red dye to see if I can get shades of pink and red.

Now off to sew this up into a bra!

To me, cold weather means snuggling up in front of a fireplace with a mug of a tea and stack of favorite books. I don’t have a fireplace but if I did I’d be snuggling the shit out of this sweater in front of it.

I wanted it to be really drapey and soft so I used Berroco* Ultra Alpaca and got exactly the effect I wanted. I ended up making** another one for my sister’s birthday present. It really is a totally effortless pattern. The instructions are super easy to follow and aside from the ribbing on the edge, it’s all stockinette. The only effort-ful thing about it is getting yourself to sit through hours and hours of mindless stockinette. I made this a while ago but I’m pretty sure I didn’t make any adjustments, except possibly adding an inch to the length. You can check out my Ravelry page for yarn details and amounts.

And actually, I just bought a couple skeins of navy wool to make another one. :]

*Does anyone else spell Berroco wrong every damn time? I swear I am constantly thinking “Ok, I remember this time. Two C’s and one R.” But nope.

**Took me two years and I made her finish the sleeves. I am a bad sister.

Adventures in accent walls

My new room is officially painted!

I had originally wanted to go with a dark purple. These were all of my options.

I aso randomly decided to pick up a few turquise and aqua colored paint chips and I’m glad I did because after staring at the [albeit gorgeous] purple paint chips for ages, I decided the turquoise was much more me.

This was the way it looked before we started.

Halfway there! one coat down, one to go!

Andddd finished! I wanted the shelf sticking out to really pop so I left it white.

The entire thing took about 4-5 hours through the course of the day. We had to tape the entire room, paint the first layer, wait several hours, paint the second layer, and then go back the next day to take the tape off.

But yay! I’m moving in tomorrow!
