I want to be a hermit seamstress in a treehouse with yarn

It is blissfully nice to be able to unpack my things and start organizing my new room. While my summer was amazing, it was getting more than a little tiring to be continuously living out of suitcases and boxes. In fact, I went on a huge grocery shopping spree this weekend and spend nearly all of yesterday cooking. It was so nice to be able to try a bunch of the recipes I bookmarked ages ago!

I’m also mostly in denial about the fact that school starts up again tomorrow. To be fair, two of my four classes are on Monday, and we have today off, so I get to ease into the first week with only two classes. So I really shouldn’t be complaining.

In my defense, I’ve been separated from my yarn stash and my sewing machine since the end of June. I found a few dresses I had been working on right before I left for France and nearly cried. I’ll just be locking myself in my scrumptious new room for a straight week to work on all of these thankyouverymuch.

Or I could be a responsible adult and go do the four chapters of reading that one of my professors has already so kindly assigned. (Although to be honest, I already snuck a peek at the first chapter and the book sounds awesome! </hermione>)

One of my favorite things about my new room is the built in shelving. I was almost a little overwhelmed while I was unpacking, trying to decide what I should put on each of the shelves. I’m pretty happy with the way this one turned out. Excuse the chaos in the top and bottom shelves. I had thought I’d found all my yarn but then discovered three more bags I had forgotten about. Whoops. Who’s not allowed to buy yarn anymore for a while? -raises hand-

I hope everyone’s having a great long weekend!

Unpacking and more unpacking

The past few days have been jam-packed with moving-related adventures. There was the actual move out, then the move in, then the Ikea and Home Depot trip, and then the cleaning of the old apartment, followed by the return of the old apartment keys.

I think today will be my first errand-less day to stay at home and lounge and unpack. -fingers crossed-

Anyway, I’m really excited to have everything out of boxes and put away so I can stop having to dig through stuff trying to find other stuff. I did manage to unpack my makeup and set it up on my dresser! I’ve always wanted a makeup “area” (other than the bathroom) and this worked out perfectly!

I have two diy-ed hanging wall shelfy things that will go on the wall next to this and will hold accessories and hair stuffs.

Now time for a snack and then more unpacking!

Room decor fun! aka Pinterest addiction

So if anyone’s interested in the long list of reasons I haven’t posted in ten years, it includes everything from not having internet to getting norovirus to my keyboard epic failing. In fact, I’m back in the land of interwebs and recovered from norovirus but am somehow getting by typing on a keyboard with a broken o, l, and enter key. I keep copy-pasting the letters I need, and needess to say, it’s taking forever.

Anyway, I’m getting ready to move next week so of course instead of spending my time packing like a responsible adult, I’ve made a new board on Pinterest and have been pinning all sorts of ideas for pretty room decor.

This is vaguely the color scheme I’m going for.

I find it hilarious that it was inspired by this photo.

I made my own version of this duvet cover. I’m considering doing some pillows too.

This is the paint color I’m going with. Unless I change my mind tomorrow at the store.

I’m trying smething different with my bed this time. First of all I’m downgrading to a full because the room is so small that my queen would just take up all of the space. I also decided to get a plain wooden ikea bed which I’m going attempt t uphster. More on that later but here is the fabric I’ll be using for that.

Andd meet the rug I bought today! I had a different one in mind but when I went in to look at it, it just seemed a little too big, a little too dark, and a little too off. luckily this one was sitting nearby screaming “Buy meeee instead!” So I did.

Anyhoo, I’m super excited to get to start putting everything together! And I’m crossing my fingers this doesn’t all end up looking heinous together..

Sidenote: fabric.com is having a fantastic sale right now, and on top of that, you can use the promo code THX128 THX218 [sorry!] to get 15% off your order! [I’m not affiliated with them, I just discovered this as I was ordering and wanted to share!]

Moooving Part 2

Holy crap moving is exhausting!

I got into Boston super late Thursday night and have been staying with Boyfriend whilst I slowly move in.

No knitting to speak of, but I did spend Saturday buying out Ikea and today Boyfriend’s roommate drove us down to her parents’ house by a lake. We basically spent the afternoon hanging out on their boat and wakeboarding/tubing. Until we ran out of gas in the middle of the lake and had to swim back. Whoops.

I don’t really remember Friday. There was jetlag and wine.

I was all set to start school on Tuesday until I looked at my schedule and realized I don’t have class on Tuesdays. So I’ll be spending tomorrow and Tuesday attempting to build Ikea furniture and setting up my room!

And then maybe I’ll write a real update. I think I’m the most excited about the little shelfy thing I bought for yarns.

I pricked my finger about eighty times today.

Today a package arrived from my sister, and when I dumped out the contents it looked like an army of tiny cloth ghosts.

Back story: we’ve both been drooling over fancy Anthropologie/Urban Outfitters duvet covers that we can’t seem to justify doling out $345 for and recently I came across this lovely DIY tutorial.

She doesn’t have her sewing machine with her at school so she cut out all of the squares, sewed the bunchy thing in the middle, and then mailed them to me to sew together.

It’s kind of a bitch to do but it’s coming along surprisingly quickly. I’m pretty sure this would be tons easier with some sort of quilting tabletop grid thing (my grandma is cringing to herself while she reads that) but so far pinning 60% of the surface and attacking it with a tape measure after every seam seems to work pretty well.

The finished duvet cover is going to be six squares by six squares, and each sewn square is 15″ x 15″, totalling 90″ x 90″. So far I’ve sewn two rows of six squares together.

Andd she’s agreed to make me another set of squares so I can make my own duvet cover. Seesterly sweatshopish bonding? Yee!

Somehow I’ve also managed to finish all of the body of Georgia and am currently working on one sleeve. I also cast on the back of Hermione McRainbowpants and am about to start armhole decreases, Stockholm is about 2/3 of the way done, and I’m literally about an hour away from finishing the sapphire Damask. I also cleaned out the car, stored all of my crap that I’m not bringing, and finished packing everything (I’m moving across the country on Saturday) except things like toothbrushes and the clothes I’m currently sporting.

I’m fairly certain that my days have suddenly started lasting 30 hours instead of the standard 24.
