Hungerween

If you’ve been following my instagram you’ll know that Halloween this year sort of turned into Hungerween what with a group of us choosing Hunger Games related costumes. I think it started when my roomie decided she wanted to make Effie Trinket’s butterfly dress from Catching Fire. And then it exploded.

We spent the better part of the last month putting together costumes and getting waaay into it. I’m still working on sorting through the 900 photos that were taken Friday night and will definitely be doing individual costume posts!

And since I completely forgot to post this in the midst of Hungerween craziness last week, the winner of the Love at First Stitch giveaway is Lisa!

Congrats Lisa! Please email me so I can get your book out to you!

Happy Halloween!

I hope everyone on this side of the country is safe and dry! Here in Boston we had tons of rain and wind yesterday but it’s suspiciously sunny and dry now.

We celebrated Halloween this weekend with a little too much vodka. And now I’m sad that my favorite holiday is mostly over. I had been wracking my brain for over a month and couldn’t for the life of me think of what I wanted to be for Halloween. It wasn’t until the morning of the Halloween party while Boyfriend and I were wandering around a thrift store that we both happened the find the perfect alterable garments for a couples’ costume.

Anddd here’s what we came up with!

I tore up the top a bit to make it more ratty, and that skirt used to be ankle length. I cut the top off and gathered the bottom, mostly in the back, to create a faux-bustle effect.

Boyfriend did his all on his own! The costumer in me swells with pride.

Happy Halloween

I did manage to scrape together a last minute costume yesterday. Boyfriend and I had plans to go to a party hosted by his school at a club downtown, but neither of us had had time to discuss or put together a costume until the day of.

Still, I think we did pretty well!

Dwight K. Schrute and a Schrute Farms beet.

He bought his entire outfit at a thrift/costume shop and I picked out a purple dress at Forever21 and plucked some leaves and tied them to a headband. The sticker on my side is a Schrute Farms logo like those stickers that come on veggies. 🙂

Sidenote: IT’S SNOWING!! I’ve never lived anywhere where it snowed!! There are literally bits of ice falling out of the sky!! Thisissocool.

Guys, I’m freaking out a little.

I start on Halloween costumes ridiculously early.

I somehow managed to get the bodice right on the first try. This literally never happens.

The headband took me about ten minutes to make. I literally just took a thick plastic headband and attacked it with thick red ribbon and a glue gun. There was minor stitching on the actual bow part though but minimal.

For the gusseted sleeves I used Aranel’s tutorial, same one I used to make my Susan Pevensie archery sleeves. I just made the holes bigger. I can’t tell you how many tutorials I read where people cut corners by just sewing on strips of red fabric, or cutting holes without finishing them. One person even described painting red ovals on. o.O

I also made a petticoat with two layers of tulle. I have two more strips cut out but it’s already so fluffy I want to try it on under the finished dress before I decide if it needs more poof.

I already can’t wait for Halloween! …..Maybe I should work on the part where I don’t have actual plans yet.
