It’s snowing!!! I wasn’t planning on taking photos today but I’d been meaning to post this sweater and the snowflakes were so fat and glorious I couldn’t resist.

Anyway, this post is a four-in-one! As I was getting dressed I started thinking about before I started knitting and I have no idea how I ever survived winters. Granted, I lived in California where “winter” really has to be put in quotes, but I do remember constantly being cold. Thank god for wool.

When I came across this pattern I absolutely loved how the sample garment looked and decided to go with the suggested yarn in the exact colorway they used. I never in a million years would’ve picked this one off the shelf but the end result is so cool! This is what it looks like on the skein:

CIMG2252Where does all the purple come from??? It’s like magic.

I forgot to photograph them but the pattern also includes lined pockets which I did in a solid purple wool. Super cozy to stick frozen fingers into. Anyway, I made a few adjustments to the pattern which you can find on my Ravelry page. After trying out all kinds of button styles I decided that toggles were the cutest. I got mine at the sadly now-closed Windsor Button in downtown Boston.

The mittens are the Give a Hoot pattern, which I shortened to be fingerless. Other than that it’s a solid and straightforward pattern that I highly recommend, especially for impatient beginners. The Leg Warmer pattern by Jane Richmond is magical and super simple, and I actually recently bought yarn to make two more pairs. I think for my next pair I’ll do contrasting colors, with a marine blue tweed on top and a mustard tweed on the bottom so that I can flip them upside down depending on what color I’m in the mood for.

And finally, the Braided headband pattern is one of my favorites for winter. I don’t always like to wear my hair down and it’s nice to have an ear-covering option that allows for updos. I made some major adjustments to mine (actually the only thing that’s the same is the actual cable lol) and I realized after trying to recreate it from my Ravelry notes that my Ravelry notes make absolutely no sense. Ignore those. I’ll rewrite one that’s not gibberish soonishly.

Sidenote: If you want to pick up a pair of Hunters, they’re currently available at Costco at 50% off the retail cost!

I hate waiting

Every time I finish a knitted project and bind off the last stitch, I always get super excited to put it on and parade it around. It’s not usually until five minutes later that I remember that it still needs to be blocked and possibly have some ends woven in and maybe a few buttons sewn on. In short, I won’t be able to wear it for at least two to three days.

Anyway, the reason I’m whining is because this lovely pile of cuddliness is laid out flat in the corner of my apartment and shows no signs of being dry before the end of the weekend. And yes, I have been checking almost hourly.

On the bright side, look at these gorgeous buttons I found! Everything they had was either too plasticky or too manufactured-looking or they only had one left, and then the guy at the store whipped out these ones and they were perfect!

CIMG2264

On a completely unrelated note, I was making corn chowder for the first time yesterday and for some reason decided to add chopped celery.

Absolutely terrible idea. The flavor didn’t go with the rest of the soup at all.

So I spent twenty minutes plucking out every single bit of celery from the soup.

CIMG2269

Yes, I’m weird. But the soup was infinitely better afterwards.

Jetlagged

Well, I’m back in Boston where there is an utter lack of snow. Or anything resembling snow.

As a form of protest, I’ve spent the afternoon oggling patterns and buying yarn online.

My next two projects are going to be this one and this one, probably in that order, although I guess it depends on which yarn arrives first.

I popped over to my lys earlier because I knew I’d seen Berocco Campus in there before. Sadly they didn’t have the color I wanted, and every single other colorway is either a mix of gray/black/white which is not what I wanted, or was a hideous mix of colors. So I ended up ordering the yarn from WEBS. And now I’m antsily attempting to work on Seester’s Christmas sweater instead, whilst intermittently checking the shipping status of the order I just placed two hours ago every fifteen minutes.

I ordered yarn for Bazan from eBay because I couldn’t find the colorway I wanted anywhere else. And of course the more places that didn’t have it, the more I wanted it. There was a moment right before I clicked “Place Order” when I asked myself, am I really going to wear a red shrug? But I decided that yes, I am, so I bought three skeins. For $5.80 each! Even WEBS lists this yarn for $12.95 per skein! -happy dance-

Speaking of Seester’s Christmas sweater, I think I mentioned that she squee’d over my Effortless Cardigan when I wore it at home and decided she wanted one in a plum-ish color. I’m currently about 2.5″ past splitting the sleeves. Note to self: straight stockinette is no fun when you’re impatiently awaiting more exciting yarn deliveries.

Finally, as the title suggests, I’ve been here two days and am still feeling groggy. You’d think that three hours wouldn’t be that hard to adjust to but technically waking up at 10am here is like waking up at 7am back home, and that’s quite a difference. Especially when you take into consideration the fact that I actually woke up at 1:30pm today. Which technically, my body thinks of as 10:30am, which is a perfectly respectable time to wake up.

Anyway, my point is, pictures later and apologies if none of this made sense.
