This might seem surprising but a year ago I owned about three dresses (like appropriate-for-public dresses, not counting the ones only appropriate in Middle Earth) and one skirt. And exactly one of those three dresses was not club-wear.

Then I bought a few patterns and started learning how to make dresses and pretty soon I had a whole closet-ful. But I still only had one skirt!

Anyway, this skirt was my first experiment with pattern-less skirt-making. To be fair, I made a few in high school but they were such ruffled low-rised monstrosities that it’s best to forget their existence and just back away quietly.

I think I might do a tutorial on this one, if anyone’s interested. It’s really simple and only involves the tiniest bit of math. Or, if you’re math-phobic like me, some minor trial and error. I used some kind of gold linen that has bits of sparkly gold woven in. It’s not the easiest thing to iron but it definitely creates a cool shimmery effect.

In other news, I just saw this video over at Maidae and I’m just itching to dye my hair red again.

In other other news, I finally figured out how to use my vintage non-auto-focusing lens for taking outfit pictures! It was actually stupidly easy and now I feel dumb for not having tried it before.

Happy birthday to mee

Soooooo I’m 26 today.

Not really sure how I feel about that.

Ask me how I feel about my birthday present to myself instead. I wanted this dress as soon as I saw Dear Creatures’ spring collection and decided to preorder it as a birthday present to myself.

I’m about eighty different kinds of happy about this one. :]

Tonight I’m being an epic nerd and going to a bar to play Magic the Gathering. Birthday festivities will continue on the weekend.

Hope you guys are having a fabulous week!

You know that feeling when you’re craving a season that still at least five months away and clothing more suited to that season starts jumping out at you from your closet and you briefly consider dressing for that weather in the hopes that that weather will magically appear but you end up having to choke back sobs as you put those clothes back in storage for five months?

Well, this isn’t quite like that. But almost.

I bought myself a birthday present from Emerging Thoughts a few weeks ago and they happened to be offering grab bags so I snagged one. Somehow, magically, one of the items they sent me was a dress I had been eyeballing last summer! Except it really is a summer dress and we’ve had two weeks of pretty steady snow.

After I was done squee-ing, I hung it up and stared at it, petting it occasionally, and thought of all the different outfits I would make with it once summer rolled around.

And then I became annoyed. I have a brand new gorgeous dress by my absolute favorite designer. Why should I have to wait to wear it? Did I mention it has pockets??

So I decided to attempt to winter-ify it. Because expecting a person to wait months to wear a brand new Dear Creatures dress is just nonsense.

Who’s that girl?

You know that awesome feeling when you make a goal for yourself and you actually do it?

It feels pretty good.

I have a confession. I’ve been in love with Zooey Deschanel ever since I saw her in Bridge to Terabithia (which has always made me bawl like an infant, by the way), and when I got my Bon Look glasses a few months ago, my roommate asked me why on earth I didn’t watch New Girl. I didn’t really have an answer, so the next Tuesday, I snuggled on the couch with her and it was pretty much the best half hour ever.

Are you shocked that I was immediately inspired to make a dress from the show?

I used pretty basic pattern frankensteining for this one. I used Simplicity 1873 for the pleated skirt and then used Burda 7309 for the bodice and Burda 7739 for the sleeves, which I elongated to make them end just above the elbow. The dress itself is made of red cotton sateen and is super soft with a tiny bit of stretch. I might be wearing this on Valentine’s Day for whatever Boyfriend has planned that he refuses to divulge.

Still need to work on the lack of photo editing skills. We’ll get there.

Happy Monday, guys!
