Congrats Emma! Please contact me to receive your prize.

Soooo in other news, I sort of fell off the Me Made May map. At least the one on the internets. I’ve actually been wearing me-mades about six days a week (I even made an entirely me-made outfit because I lost my brain while packing for my trip to California and ran out of clothes on day three!) but being on vacation made it strangely difficult to remember to take photos of said outfits.

I’ve definitely learned a lot about my wardrobe and dress-of-self-preferences though.

-Some knits > other knits. I’m banned from every buying tissue knits again but I definitely need more knit tops. And bottoms.

-My number one go-to garment is leggings. I made a really great pair of black Virginia leggings out of this awesome moisture-wicking fabric I got on eBay and it’s probably the number 1 most worn item in my closet. The problem is I’m highly lacking in tops that cover my bum enough to wear with just leggings.

-I need moar Netties! I made one and I’m hooked. I’m foreseeing at least two crops, two bodysuits, and two dress versions. I made mine with the scoop front and mid scoop back and it’s scrumptious. I want to try a high neck/super low back version for sure. Maybe even a sleeveless one!

-No more dresses. Ok, that’s unrealistic. But I think my current dress to separates ratio is something like 5:1 and it really needs to be more like 1:5.

-Maxi skirts are my new favorite thing. I think I could live in maxi skirts and cropped Netties. Or maxi dresses! Knit maxi-dresses are the exception to the previous rule because they’re actually wearable to work.

-I think I want to attempt a blazer again.

The Art of Whimsical Lettering: book review + giveaway!

The Art of Whimsical Lettering - jacket art
The Art of Whimsical Lettering by Joanne Sharpe
Interweave/F+W Media; $24.99

Interweave generously provided a copy of this book for me to review, but all opinions, thoughts, and obscure computer game references are my own.

I’ve been a huge fan of Jenny Highsmith’s lettering prints for ages so when Interweave asked if I wanted to review this book on Whimsical Lettering I had to go for it. As much as I love Jenny’s prints, I never saw one that had a message that quite fit what I was looking for. But now, armed with Joanne Sharpe’s amazingly colorful book (no seriously, it’s like a jar of Skittles for your eyes), I think I’m ready to dive in.

The book is divided into sections and the whole thing is just so inspiring and gorgeous to look at. Some sections talk about styling your font, others give ideas for watercoloring or monochromatic designs, and then there’s a whole section of alphabet ideas!

This one where you write out a message and then stitch it with colored embroidery floss warmed my seamstress heart.

How pretty are these??

Well, I already know that my first print is going to say “Ask me about Grim Fandango.” (100000000 points to anyone who gets it.)

Interweave is very kindly offering a copy of The Art of Whimsical Lettering to one of my readers! Just leave a comment below telling me what message/word/phrase you’d write out on a print. Make sure you include your email so you can be contacted about receiving your prize!

The giveaway will be open until midnight Tuesday, May 20th and the winner will be announced shortly after.

Mend & Make Fabulous: Book Review + Giveaway!

Mend and Make Fabulous - jacket art
Mend & Make Fabulous by Denise Wild
Interweave/F+W Media; $19.99

Interweave generously provided a copy of this book for me to review, but all opinions, thoughts, and verbal drool-age are my own.

I saw a meme recently that was something along the lines of comparing asking a seamstress to mend things to asking Michaelangelo to paint your garage. I lol-ed but let’s be honest. We all have a stuff-that-needs-mending pile and if you’re like me, it just keeps growing. Mending is generally much less interesting than picking up a shiny new project and lots of what’s in my mending pile is stuff I have no idea how to fix and am kind of in deniable about its salvageability but can’t bear to part with it yet.

But then Interweave sent me this book to review and I basically fell off my chair. (Ok, who am I kidding, I was reading this curled up in bed.) First of all, it’s written by Burdastyle’s own Denise Wild. (She was actually on the Today show last week, which you can see here!) Secondly, the photographs are absolutely beautiful. Like the vintage dress in the photo above. And this adorable pink dress so full of twee I just want to wear it to a tea party with eight kittens wearing mary janes. (I’m not joking.)

Denise divides her book into categories (e.g. hems, closures, rips, etc.) and each section includes detailed photographed tutorials on how to mend that type of issue/area as well as ideas of how to make garments even more fabulous.

Now, I don’t know about you guys, but there are some garment-related issues that I’ve always assumed were un-fixable. Like if you tear sheer fabric, you’re basically screwed. And if your jeans stretch out throughout the day and end up sagging down your butt, you should probably look into different jeans. But no, Denise has the answers.

And her DIY (or MIF, for Make it Fabulous?) ideas have all sorts of wheels turning in my little creative brain. I’ll be honest, I did not expect a book on mending to be such a huge source of inspiration but I’ve got several tutorials earmarked to try. Like this lace applique tutorial! I’m thinking of a peplum top with a lace applique collar. And I have a pair of cute denim shorts that are getting to a level of scandalousness that is a bit NSFW that I could add some lace to the bottoms of! And then this bleaching tutorial! Gah! Do you see those leggings in the top right??

On top of all that, the styling in this book is just beautiful. Even as I flip through random pages my little copycat-ing brain keeps twitching. Ineedthesecoats. Actually I’m pretty sure that entire navy coat outfit needs to be mine.

Anyway, excuse my drooling. Interweave is very kindly offering a copy of Mend and Make Fabulous to one of my readers! Just leave a comment below telling me your worst garment tearing/damaging/destroying/mending-absolutely-required mishap. Make sure you include your email so you can be contacted about receiving your prize!

The giveaway will be open until midnight Tuesday, April 15th and the winner will be announced shortly after.
