Have I mentioned how obsessed I am with Doctor Who? I started watching ten days ago and I’m currently finishing up season six. Yeah, whoops? So far I remain skeptical about Matt Smith. And Amy Pond. And the new tardis. And the new intro theme. *scowl*

And can I just mention that I have absolutely no idea why it took me this long to get into this show?? I mean, I sort of know why. I’m well aware of my tendency to get over-obsessed with things, particularly with tv shows (e.g. Firefly, LotR, X-Files, I could go on but this is embarrassing enough) and I just didn’t have the time or energy to add another one to the list. Another one IΒ knew I’d go completely bonkers over. Still though, how I managed to go the last eight years without knowing anything about Doctor Who other than the title and that it was something sci-fi-y is beyond me. Up until ten days ago I thought a tardis was a little blue creature that followed the Doctor around!

Unrelated: I miss David Tennant. I may have a slight lady-boner for him.

Anyway, I made this dress on a whim last week. Let’s call it the sewing equivalent of a rain dance, except wishing for sun and warm weather. Which makes no sense and is completely backward so let’s not actually call it that.

I used this pattern from Burdastyle, with minor adjustments to the bust area. I also lowered the neckline by about two inches and shortened the skirt a few inches as well.

And no, I did not start this entry intending to ramble endlessly about Doctor Who.

  1. I’m not ashamed to admit that I cried like a baby on David Tennant’s last episode. And I’m not really a crier. Oh, David. . .

Also, your dress is adorable πŸ™‚

    1. Oh my god, I bawled my eyes out. Actually the number of episodes of Doctor Who that I bawled my eyes out during is kind of embarrassingly high. I’d guess it would be about.. half. -_-

      1. I was checking it on burdastyle and then I thought, wait a minute this dress looks so much like the one in sewing vintage modern book. The Elizabeth gathered-waist dress. I found my book, and it is! I need to adjust the neckline but the rest is identical. So I’ll save me some money and some trees πŸ™‚

  2. I am TOTALLY in love with Doctor Who. I love David Tennant but Matt Smith grew on me. I much prefer the Amy and Rory companion set than just Amy aline; luckily Rory joins quickly. The new episodes have started on BBC America; I won’t spoil it if you haven’t seen it.

    1. I am JUST now warming up to Matt Smith. Only took two seasons haha. I do love the Amy/Rory combo. They have such cute banter. I think it’s just that SO much changed with the start of season 5. New doctor, new companion, new tardis, new intro theme, new sonic screwdriver, etc. Once he started mentioning old companions and events it started feeling less like a whole new show haha. But yee! I’m five episodes from being totally caught up!

  3. Adorable! I love this dress! I tried to make this pattern when I first started sewing and it was a total disaster– I had all this weird extra fabric running from above my bust to the shoulder. I should go back and try to make it again cause I looooove your dress!

I’ve just gotten into Dr. Who, too! I’m usually more into comedies than anything kinda sci-fi (except X-Files… I still love you, Mulder!!), but Dr. Who is funny enough that I’m really enjoying it. πŸ™‚

    1. I had kind of a similar problem with the bust area. I’m not sure how to explain it but I ended up having to make the bust darts basically twice as wide. There was also some extra fabric in the shoulder-y area but taking in the shoulder seam a bit fixed that.

I looove X-Files!! I may have worn a trench coat and fake FBI badge to school on several occasions in high school. MAY have. (Deny everything.) ;]

  4. This dress is sooo adorbs. ^_^

It took me a good two seasons before I realized David Tennant was Barty Crouch, Jr. *ashamed* But, yeah…lurves him. Boyfriend has a man-crush on Chris Eccleston. Neither of us particularly likes Matt Smith. Meh. I have very nearly convinced him to go to Nashville Expo (our lame version of ComicCon) as David Tennant’s Doctor and I’m going to make a blue tardis dress. Eep!

    1. Ahaha I looked him up and then had to watch that scene over. I NEVER would’ve realized it on my own. He is SO creepy with the tongue thing! OMG though, you must post pics of this!! *jealous*

  5. Such a cute dress. I’m just getting into Doctor Who myself. But stupid university means I can’t go on a major spree, so I’m only on season 2 of the new ones. To be honest, I’m still having trouble adjusting to David Tennant. I was quite fond of Christopher Eccleston!

    1. I did too! I remember being quite irritated at Rose at the end of the Christmas Invasion when she was saying something along the lines of trusting him again. I was still pouting over the loss of Christopher Eccleston. Buut a few episodes later I was totally won over. :]

  6. Love the dress! well done! Did you line the bodice?
Ok since I feel like I’m in good company I going to rave about Battlestar Glacatica, do you know it? If you don’t I’m jealous because now you get to see the whole series! it’s the best show IN THE WORLD and I am not kidding.

    1. I did! In previous versions I just used bias tape but it never looked quite right so with this one I tried lining it. MUCH better.

I haven’t seen it before but it’s definitely on my list!! I might have to do that one next!

  7. Wow! I am so impressed by your adorable dresses! I hope you stop by and post on my Sew & Tell Saturday link party! @ the Sew Country Chick blog

  8. I just found your site from Burdastyle and I love everything that you’re doing (including this adorable dress!). Can’t wait to see more!
