Sometimes I decide to do crazy things like make a dress in one day. Sometimes it’s fine because the reason for rushing has more to do with the excitement of working on it than a deadline. Other times it’s because I have a Mad Men party to go to the next day and had completely forgotten to make something to wear to it.
This was one of the latter.
I thought I was planning ahead, I had a Betty Draper dress all picked out to replicate (and by replicate, I mean loosely. I’m not a huge fan of the pointy boob thing and I really can’t wear a skirt that long), and I even ordered a lovely vintage 1960s dress pattern on Etsy. I did everything but remember to buy fabric and, you know, start sewing it.
It was a bit of a stressful day, but luckily the pattern was pretty basic (despite missing the instructions!) and I managed to cobble together this lovely thing.
I even had time leftover to make this poofy monstrosity to go under it! See how un-poofy it is without it? A miracle, I tell you. 14 yards worth of miracle.
I used this tutorial.
And now I want to make that pretty blue dress Jane wears. The one with the gorgeous tie collar.
Uh oh. This is a dangerous path.
What’s your favorite Mad Men dress?
Oh, too lovely for words! I can’t believe you made this in a day. I did a Joan tribute dress, but I really want to copy one of Betty’s season one/two shirtdresses. That’s up next. Love Jane’s wardrobe, though…
Ooh I love Betty’s shirtdresses! Actually I pretty much love everything she wears –except that garish blue/sparkly monstrosity. Everything else though!

The last few times I have logged on to BurdaStyle I see this beautiful piece, and it belongs to you! Love seeing all the things you have done! Now I am going to skip Burda and just log on to your blog!
Thank you and welcome! :]

This is gooooorgeous! I can’t believe how stunning it is! I love Jane’s blue dress, too, but there’s a peach sleeveless shirtdress with lace details on the bodice that Betty wears that I love and hope to make one of these days. Of course, I love everything Joan wears, but I don’t really have the shape to pull off wiggle dresses.

Ooh, this is scrumptious beyond words. And you can’t beat a one-day dress. Really nice work!!
I can’t think of a favorite Mad Men outfit off the top of my head, but I have loved Megan’s style this season.

The dress is fabulous. Thanks for the petticoat link. Think I have about three tutorials when I get round to making one.

So lovely. And so inspiring that you completed it in just one day.

I just used the same tutorial for a new petticoat for myself; vintage dresses/skirts just are not the same without it. The dress is lovely!

Hi! Might I ask: what kind of fabric did you use for the petticoat? it looks fluffy and perfect under the dress! Thanks, Lucy
Aww thank you! I think it was a just a plain white cotton. Make sure it’s not too heavy that it weighs down on you but that it’s heavy enough to hold its shape enough to be fluffifying (yes, I occasionally invent words). 🙂
